Introducing a Light Switch that Works Wonders

There’s no better time to switch from incandescent light bulbs to energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

Don't be the last in your neighborhood to see the light, now's the time to repalce your old-fashioned, incandescent light bulbs with state-of-the-art, energy efficient CFLs. It’s easy, it’s cost-effective, and it’s the right thing to do — right now. Here are three important reasons to take Hawaii Energy’s Three CFL Challenge today:

Savings

By replacing three frequently used incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, the average household can save in energy costs. Click here to see how much you can save using our CFL calculator. CFLs use 75 percent less energy and last nearly ten times as long as traditional incandescent light bulbs. In most homes, the most frequently used fixtures are the ones located in the kitchen, living room, bathroom and outside.

Safety

CFLs don’t contain the lead that’s found, in dangerously high amounts, in old-fashioned bulbs. According to EPA TCLP toxicity tests*, incandescent bulbs contain lead at levels that exceed hazardous waste limits, and are regulated as hazardous wastes because they contain toxic heavy metals. If they’re thrown away in the regular garbage, this lead will sooner or later find its way into nature.

Style

For those who value aesthetics over savings, CFLs offer consumers a greater variety of sizes, shapes and colors than incandescent bulbs. The incandescent bulb really hasn’t changed all that much since Thomas Edison patented it back in 1879. More than 130 years later the familiar bulbs still use the same technology, and still waste a whole lot of energy.  When purchasing your CFLs, reference the Lighting Facts packaging label to purchase a bulb that suites your aesthetic needs.
